In recent years, the timber trade between China and Russia has continued to heat up, which has become a significant part of the economic and trade cooperation between the two sides.
According to the latest data released by the Russian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, in the first four months of 2024, wood exports of wood exporters to China surged to nine times, according to the previous Ministry of Agriculture.
This significant increase not only highlights the booming timber trade between China and Russia, but also reflects the continued growth of China's demand for high-quality timber.
Looking back, a lot of timber has turned to China because of the transition between Russia and its traditional market in Europe (click to review). According to data from the General Administration of Customs, from January to April 2024, Russia's timber trade volume with China reached 972 million US dollars, up 4.88 percent year on year. At the same time, timber exports to China also rose steadily by 2.6 percent to 4.78 million cubic meters, ranking firmly as the second largest supplier of timber imports to China.
At the same time, in order to further expand the international market, the Russian government is actively taking measures to promote timber export, increase logistics subsidies for timber transportation and open a platform for timber promotion and exchange, and the Russian government has provided strong support for timber exporters.
This effort is reflected in the data: According to the website, Russia increased by 397,200 cubic meters, 124.8%, 812,500 rubles and 956 contracts.
The contracts cover companies in 40 regions, including the Krasnoyarsk region, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk regions, and the Republic of Udmurt. This extensive geographical participation shows the vitality and diversity of the Russian timber industry.
SPbMTSB Senior Managing Director Alexey Ryzhikov said, " We are actively expanding the timber market to attract more industry companies and organizations to participate in exchange trading. At the same time, we work closely with Rosleskhoz to develop mechanisms to identify unfair practices and improve industry transparency. These efforts will improve trading processes, increase market liquidity, and promote the formation of fair prices.”
Looking ahead, the growth of China-Russia timber trade will be one of the highlights of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Judging from the performance of Udmurt timber exporters, this growth trend will continue for some time to come.
